University Education
Background of the university section's administrative organization :
ue1
In June 1954 the academy system was modified to provide cadets with a four-year general knowledge education combining civilian and military skills. On July 1st,1955, the academy established a general science section (beneath which were eight academic departments), and gradually abolished the original educational committee. Following the implementation of the new system, cadets may graduate in four years and the educational system resembles that of a civilian university. In September, 1963, the Chinese section of the original language department and the history/geography section of the original political science department were merged into the culture/history department, and separate foreign language and political science departments were established under the social science section (both departments were headed by the director of the political warfare section).

ue2 In order to modify the organizational system and integrate education and administrative support, in 1969 the military training section and the general science section were placed under the direct jurisdiction of the dean of the faculty. On April lst, 1975, the general science section was renamed the natural science section under the jurisdiction of the dean of the faculty. In conjunction with the academy's strengthening program, in August 1996 the social science section and natural science section were merged into the university section, beneath which were ten academic departments and administrative and support units. The university section was also upgraded to a level of one unit, and made responsible for providing a university education and reported directly to the superintendent.

The attached chart shows the academy's organizational structure.

Transformation of the university education system :

First stage
The military academy was reestablished at Fengshan in Taiwan in 1950, and a four-year university education was adopted in 1953. Curriculum design focused on providing a liberal education, and all cadets took the same required credits for graduation.

Second stage:
Six specialized fields─electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, physics, mathematics, and culture/history─were established in 1978. Management science was established in 1980, computer science was established in 1987, and chemistry was established in 1993. Curriculum design has aimed to impart general knowledge and specific fields of specialization. The 139 credits required for graduation must include 94 of common courses, 30 of required specialized courses, and 15 of elective specialized courses.

Third stage:
On January 14, 1999, the academy was granted authorization to establish seven specialized departments (electrical engineering, mechanical engineering , civil engineering, chemistry, management science, computer science, and physics). During the current stage curriculum design will emphasize balanced general and specialized knowledge. Of the 128 credits required for graduation, 28 must come from common courses, 14 from required military courses, 66 form required specialized courses, and 20 from elective specialized courses.
